Universities

Universities are institutions of higher education and research, and are found the world over. Universities grant academic degrees - associate, bachelor, master, and doctorate - at all levels of study, and certificates for specialized academic preparation in a variety of fields of study. Universities provide for learning skills applicable to functions of business, medicine, education, research, management, engineering, psychology, authorship, animation, and any other subject of interest or use for advancement of knowledge, experience, or career.

Universities and colleges are systems for instruction, designed to allow students to study and learn skills for certification and degrees that provide for quality professions and careers. University students can enter into degree programs in any field of study to develop their understanding of those subjects. Degree programs also require the study of liberal arts subjects that provide for general understanding of the world. Curriculums in universities offer options for specialization in the many fields, and students can choose to study in postgraduate programs for advanced degrees and certificates.

Universities are funded in various ways, privately by donors (such as Harvard University), publicly from taxes (such as state universities), by religious organizations, and by tuition and fees paid by attending students. Universities employ large numbers of people, and are generally academic or teaching institutions that are actively involved in conducting research. Working as faculty members in universities generally requires a doctorate degree in the academic field being taught. However, there are some teaching positions, such as fine arts, where the master degree, rather than doctorate degree, is the terminal degree in that discipline.
