Should We Allow Religious Doctrine to Cloud Science?

Should we allow religion and religious doctrine to cloud science? Didnt we already do that and it took years to prove the Earth was round? Recently in an online think tank conversation a religious researcher claiming to be correct on every account claimed that man was different than animals and refused to consider the recent finding that the DNA of humans and chimpanzees was 99% similar. One think tank member challenged her on this but she shot back;

I don't quite understand why you feel I have taken an authoritative stance to your own adopted beliefs.

Considering this predicament I thought how convenient for the religious researcher to use this psychological trick to turn the tables on the other think tanker without answering the question or backing up her claim with any evidence. But before anyone had a chance to do anything about it the other think tank member answered;

You have attempted to use a few scientific terms in ambiguity in order to thrust your argument over the facts presented. Thus your authoritative stance has been exhibited over the DNA evidence, and refuting it with no back up. I have no adopted beliefs other than actual observation. How else would you suppose one develop such? By reading a religious text written by men to control other men?

Interestingly enough the religious fundamentalist could not answer the question and resorted to a liberal debate trick they use in politics; attack the other party if you have nothing worthy to offer, so she stated;

However let me be the first to admit that playing up a knowledge showdown does come across as a rather childish process.

The other think tank member would have none of this non-sense and said; I believe you have completely refuted all the evidence I have provided with not one shred of evidence of your own. I have cited the Top scientists and researchers in the field. The showdown is that you have called them all wrong and have not one proof to the contrary only a belief of yours.

You act authoritative, yet did not even know who these people are and asked me to prove my statement after reading all their works and even visiting some of their facilities. Childish is a term you use, yet only you have exhibited. If you want to play with mirrors, I will win. Stop playing psychological crap and own up to the fact that the evidence is so over whelming both in research and observation that it cannot be refuted.

Perhaps this is a really good lesson for all religious fundamentalist nut cases who attempt to play scientist part time. The fact is if you are bathed in preconceived notions prior to starting your research it is only garbage in garbage out and you are really annoying to those who seek the real truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help your God. Consider all this in 2006.
