Is An Online Degree Right For You?

As you might expect there are many differing views on the benefits of studying for an online degree. For some the Internet is a great way to earn a degree, others consider it the proverbial deathbed of education. And, as everyone is different and possesses different qualities, what will suit one person will be total anathema to another. People who find the Internet their preferred way of learning, both from a practical and flexible point of view, tend to possess five major qualities which can be briefly summarised as follows:

People who complete online degrees do not hunger for the social element that is found in traditional schools. They are happy to study on their own without interacting with other people for the majority of the time.

They are able to avoid the inevitable, countless distractions that arise. They are single-minded and focussed on the task in hand. They can resist picking up the phone when it rings or reading every email as it arrives.

They do not know the meaning of the word procrastination. Not for them putting off essays or waiting until the last minute to do an assignment. They are happy and familiar with deadlines and tackle all the projects as soon as possible.

They do not need a teacher to crack the whip; their self-motivation comes from within, and they are happy to set their own goals and strive to achieve them without the need for others to encourage them.

Finally they have exceptional reading comprehension which is essential to earn an online degree. If you are a distance learner you are expected to understand the material by reading it. You will not have the luxury of interacting directly with the professor when you have a question, although contact should be possible by email.

If you can truthfully say that you possess the above qualities, you could well be a good candidate for earning a degree online. You will be able to study in your own time and not be subjected to a fixed timetable for lectures. By studying online you avoid the need to travel and the expense of accommodation at a college campus. But do not lose sight of the fact that there are some inherent difficulties in an online program that are often overlooked.
