Adult Education

They used to be referred to as "non-traditional students," but adult students are the fastest growing group pursuing a college education. The number of students 40 and over increased 235 percent in recent years, according to the Education Resource Institute.

What does this mean for the families of adult co-eds? With most adults' already hectic schedules, making time for classes and studying is a significant challenge. But there are some ways to prevent chaos from reigning at home and be successful at school.

Schedule time not just for classes, but studying too. You need to designate a time where you can concentrate and hit the books. If your children are older, perhaps you can all study together. Commit to keeping this time for its intended purpose, otherwise you'll find yourself trying to fit it in while watching late night TV, which probably is not when you're at your most productive.

Delegate responsibilities. Enlist the help of your spouse and kids in getting household chores done. Don't feel guilty if you're eating take out an extra night a week during the semester or your house isn't always spotless. Learn to prioritize and don't sweat it if some of the things at the bottom of your list don't get done.

Cut down on commitments outside of work and school. You need to be practical about the time you have to dedicate to outside activities like volunteering or entertaining. You need to give yourself the amount of time needed in order to be successful at school. Be careful not to over-commit your time.

Get outside assistance. Check with your college or university. Many have support services or personnel to help adult students succeed in their educational goals.
