How To Choose A Great Baby Name

My wife recently gave birth to our first child. We were very excited when we found out that she was pregnant, and we were ready to start our family. We began preparing early for our son, decorating the nursery, buying baby clothes, and reading baby books. However, one of the most important things that we did to prepare for our son's birth was choosing a baby name.

Your baby's name will be with them forever. Your child can be teased, or picked on their entire life depending on the name that you give them. Many names carry great meaning, but they could bring turmoil throughout your child's life if they are teased. Although a name can cause teasing, it can also give a child character, and may even lead to greatness. Do you think that Dick Butkus would have been a Hall of Fame middle linebacker if his name were John Smith?

My wife looked through a large book of baby names, and secretly wrote down the names for a boy and a girl that she liked. Then she asked me to go through the same book and write down the names that I liked without letting her know which baby names I had chosen. After I was finished with my list my wife revealed her list and we looked for names that we had in common. Amazingly enough we had almost one third of our lists in common. We knew that this short list of baby names would contain the name that we would ultimately choose. The best thing to do after this is to look at the meanings of all of the names that are on the short list to help decide which name has the best meaning for your child.

You also want to pronounce your baby's name with your last name, and also with their middle name, if you are going to give them one. Usually at least half of the list that is left does not have a meaning that you like, or does not sound good with their middle or last name, so you can mark them off of the list. After all of these tips have been used, you have the hard decision of choosing a baby name. Just remember this will be much easier than the first six weeks after your baby is born, and you have all of those sleepless nights.
